When best laid plans....
Again, with the best of intentions, I planned on posting something last week, then life happened. Sick child, day care issues and the next thing you know, it's a new week. And August, already. Are you kidding? Why can't winter ever go by this quickly?

We are now in the middle of our busiest time of year. "Senior Season". The phone has been ringing like crazy! That's great! We're so happy when people choose Okemos Studio. We all really love to meet new people and enjoy what we do.

Here is another session from this winter that I enjoyed so much. Alexandre is a pixie of a thing. She loves to dance and chat and be goofy. Just what I love in a 3 year old friend! This was one of those sessions where we didn't really try to pose her, we just let her be herself and she did fabulous! Such a simple concept and such beautiful portraits. This portrait panel is actually 30" square and makes quite an impact on the wall. Her parents have hung this in her room. What a treat for Alexandre!

Another favorite session we did this year was "My Best Friend's Girl". My best friend, Kim, and I were inseparable during our younger years. This beautiful baby is Katie, her sweet little girl. Katie is the spitting image of her father, including the awesome red hair. Kim is expecting again and I cannot wait to meet Katie's baby brother when he makes his arrival!
This composite, which is also a 30" square graces the wall of the studio and we enjoy seeing it every day. We love the variety of sizes and design. Her eyes just 'pop' out of the top image!

I know, I know!

I know I promised to be better about blogging, but here it in 5 months later and nothin'. Not that I don't have anything to say, mind you. :-) Just to find time to put it into words...

I have included here some of the fun I've had the last few months.
This little guy, and I mean little was just 5 1/2 pounds when we photographed him at 13 days of age! How lucky am I to be able to hold this precious little human! He is so precious and I got all teary eyed seeing him again today.

This 'big' boy is Zachary. Z came to us when he, too was just 13 days old! This is his 9 month portrait, wearing his daddy's uniform. Funny how these little boys like to be like their daddies! Zachary is a treat and I look forward to seeing him every time he visits. He just cracks me up. What a joy!

There's been more, of course, but here I am trying to write, and I'm the only person in the office. The phone has been ringing like crazy today! More soon...and I mean it this time!

It's funny how time goes on. I can still remember the day I was in our lobby and one of our clients told us she was pregnant with twins!

This week we drew the winner of our Class of 2010 Ipod Touch giveaway... and it was one of the twins! Congratulations to Eric!

(And yes, that means I am now officially old!)

We are so pleased when people choose to drive across town and come to Okemos Studio. Hannah was a beautiful model and we had a great time creating her senior portraits!
Today I was discussing with a client that I have a Math degree from MSU - but here I am in photography. It's not the career path my parents or I would have chosen, but it's a fulfilling and enjoyable one. I was fortunate enough to be able to work with Hannah and her mom when choosing her portraits and I really enjoyed their company. It's client experiences like that that make me glad I do what I do.

When I was in junior high, we had a major fire in our home. I found the kitchen in flames and panicked. This was before 911, the phone operators were on strike and I didn't know the number of the fire department. (Did I mention I was in a panic?) I had to run to a neighbors to have them call the fire department.
During the chaos that ensued, my father (who had been sleeping) came running outside. But then he TURNED AROUND and ran back in. (Don't ever do this!) Seconds later he came out again carrying what? The 'picture drawer'. This was a drawer in which we stuffed all of our family photos, school pictures, etc. That's what he thought of. And I'm glad he did. Although the fire never reached that room and it escaped all water damage, every time I look through that drawer now, I realize what we could have lost.
Nowadays, we can back up photos on CDs and DVRs. But back then, there was nothing. What a history would have been lost if we didn't have those pictures of my sister as a baby or grandparents who have long passed away. Or my father himself, who passed away just a few short years later.
What did I learn from that experience? Besides teaching my child the # for 911 and to have many smoke detectors? It was the importance of photographs in both telling a story and keeping a history. Many people come into the studio with old pictures that are damaged. Family portraits from the 1900's. How lucky they are to have that history.
Did people do more family portraits back then? It was always a 'hassle' getting everyone ready and an expense out of the family budget. But, what an important thing for their children, grandchildren and themselves. And I'm sure they never regretted it. Would you ever regret the money or time spent on family portraits? I hope not. They can never be repeated. But chances are, they can be replaced.

Another awesome session!

Stephanie was an awesome subject for Ron and Katie! We lucked out on a pretty day and she got a great session! What a fun idea to bring her favorite book and guitar!
